Well, the time has finally come once again. After what seemed like the longest awards season in history, the 91st Academy Awards will premiere tomorrow on ABC. For months, the Oscars have been wrought with controversy and the show hasn’t even premiered yet. Needless to say, no one knows just what will happen tomorrow so, more than ever, I feel almost entirely uncertain in my selections. However, I’ve collected them all for you anyway. For the full list of nominees visit oscars.go.com/nominees

roma-1-1-1

Best Picture

Who Will Win

Roma

Who Should Win

The Favourite

Who Could Win

Green Book

Best Picture is the category I feel the least certain about. Everyone seems to be leaning heavily towards Roma, which I agree of the eight nominees is the finest artistic achievement, but Green Book has been steadily gaining traction. Also, Black Panther has the largest media company in the world campaigning behind it, so it could easily win as well. Because Roma is available on Netflix and therefore easily accessible to all Academy voters, I’ve selected it to win, but it really could be any of these three.

alfonso (1)

Best Director

Who Will Win

Alfonso Cuarón

Who Should Win

Alfonso Cuarón

Who Could Win

Spike Lee

It is very likely that Alfonso Cuarón will win for his work directing Roma. It’s a weak category and he is the heavy favorite. It will be interesting if he wins, seeing how that will be twice in five years, but seeing how the academy has strangely been favoring Mexican directors at the awards show this decade, you can expect Alfonso to take home the statue a second time.

glenn-1

Best Actress In A Leading Role

Who Will Win

Glenn Close

Who Should Win

Melissa McCarthy

Who Could Win

Olivia Colman

Glenn Close has never won an Oscar. No one wants to admit that the Academy hands out legacy awards, but they certainly do. While Olivia Colman could be a dark horse in the running, you can be very confident that Glenn Close will win tomorrow.

rami (1)

Best Actor In A Leading Role

Who Will Win

Rami Malek

Who Should Win

Bradley Cooper

Who Could Win

Christian Bale

In my opinion, this is a horrible category, because I really believe only one of the nominees deserves to be there. Time and time again the academy overlooks genuine triumphs of acting for glorified impressions because it’s easier to recognize a performance if it mimics something you’ve seen before. For this reason, the award will either go to Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, or Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, but, seeing how he has been the favorite for most of awards season, it will go to Malek.

regina-1

Best Actress In A Supporting Role

Will Win

Regina Hall

Should Win

Regina Hall

Could Win

Amy Adams

If Beale Street Could Talk is a beautiful movie that, despite being the critical darling of the year, was largely ignored from this year’s Oscar ballot. The one major award it is up for is Regina Hall for her supporting role in the film. She definitely is the most deserving of the win and I believe the Academy will reward her for it.

mahershala (1)

Best Actor In A Supporting Role

Will Win

Mahershala Ali

Should Win

Richard E. Grant

Could Win

Richard E. Grant

A win for Mahershala Ali would be another rare second win within five years, but one that is extremely likely. Everyone loves Green Book for some reason, and Mahershala seems to be their favorite part. It’s a shame because Richard E. Grant deserves this win more than anyone else in my opinion.

fav (1)

Best Original Screenplay

Will Win

The Favourite

Should Win

The Favourite

Could Win

Green Book

This race is extraordinarily close between Green Book and The Favourite. The Favourite is up for ten different awards tomorrow, but this is the only one I’m expecting it to win. The Green Book writers have repeatedly put their feet in their mouth this campaign, so I find it likely the Academy will vote away from them purely to prevent a terrible speech.

blackkk (1)

Best Adapted Screenplay

Will Win

Blackkklansman

Should Win

If Beale Street Could Talk

Could Win

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

I believe The Academy will finally recognize Spike Lee tomorrow, but not for director. You can mark my words that Spike Lee will win his first Oscar for adapting BlackKklansman’s screenplay.

spidey 1 (1)

Best Animated Feature

Will Win

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Should Win

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Could Win

Incredibles 2

I’m so happy that Spider-Verse is the front-runner this year. Even though I loved Incredibles 2, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the best animated film in years. It’s always nice to see the Best Animated Feature to go to someone other than Disney/Pixar when they deserve it.

roma 2 (1)

Best Foreign Language Film

Will Win

Roma

Should Win

Shoplifters

Could Win

Cold War

There is no question that Roma will win best foreign language film. The only question is could it be the first in history to win both foreign language and best picture.

free solo (1)

Best Documentary (Feature)

Will Win

Free Solo

Should Win

Minding The Gap

Could Win

RBG

This is a classic example of quality of film vs. topic. Free Solo is an innovative IMAX documentary that has been winning big on the awards circuit so far. However, it’s chief competitor, RBG, is a conventionally-directed documentary about a woman who Hollywood loves. Only time will tell…

beale (1)

Best Original Score

Will Win

If Beale Street Could Talk

Should Win

If Beale Street Could Talk

Could Win

Black Panther

This prediction is mostly a “how could they possibly not pick this,” choice, but, Nicholas Britell’s score for If Beale Street Could Talk is the single best creative work of 2018. Giving this award to anyone else would be purely criminal.

shallow (1)

Best Original Song

Will Win

“Shallow” from A Star Is Born

Should Win

“Shallow” from A Star Is Born

Could Win

“All The Stars” from Black Panther

Poor, poor, A Star Is Born. Six Months ago when this movie came out, every critic in the world predicted it to sweep the oscars. Now, a long award season later, it is extremely likely that an award for best song will be its only win. It’s tragic, really.

quiet (2)

Best Sound Editing

Will Win

A Quiet Place

Should Win

A Quiet Place

Could Win

Black Panther

Get Out winning original screenplay last year proved that the Academy can actually consider horror films for awards. Seeing how the entirety of A Quiet Place is just sound, I think it has an actual shot at winning tomorrow.

boho (1)

Best Sound Mixing

Will Win

Bohemian Rhapsody

Should Win

First Man

Could Win

First Man

All of the awards season pundits are predicting First Man to take this award home tomorrow. They seem to have overlooked that everyone in Hollywood forgot First Man within hours of it’s release. Bohemian Rhapsody is winning.

wakanda (1)

Best Production Design

Will Win

Black Panther

Should Win

Black Panther

Could Win

The Favourite

This is not the only race that is extraordinarily close between Black Panther and The Favourite. If we were looking at prior precedent, The Favourite should definitely win Production design because the Academy loves to award period pieces. But Black Panther is a juggernaut that can’t be ignored and seeing how their afro-futurist sets are something we’ve never really seen before, I find it likely they will win tomorrow.

another roma (1)

Best Cinematography

Will Win

Roma

Should Win

The Favourite

Could Win

Cold War

There are two things the academy likes to award best cinematography for: black-and-white, and long takes. Roma has both. Roma will win.

christian (2)

Best Make-Up and Hairstyling

Will Win

Vice

Should Win

Vice

Could Win

Mary Queen of Scots

There’s no question Vice wins this. It’s almost identical to Darkest Hour’s win last year.

panther (2)

Best Costume Design

Will Win

Black Panther

Should Win

The Favourite

Could Win

The Favourite

Another close race between Black Panther and The Favourite. I’m confident that Black Panther will win this award. Ruth Carter is one of the closest things the costuming world has to a celebrity. If Black Panther wins one award tomorrow, it will be this.

vice movie again (1)

Best Film Editing

Will Win

Vice

Should Win

BlackKklansman

Could Win

Bohemian Rhapsody

A lot of times when it comes to awards the Academy voters don’t fully understand, they give the awards out to not who had the best of something, but the most. Vice had a lot of editing. It’s probably winning. Don’t rule out Bohemian Rhapsody’s horrible editing to win though.

infinity (1)

Best Visual Effects

Will Win

Avengers: Infinity War

Should Win

Christopher Robin

Could Win

First Man

Another case of most vs. best. Avengers: Infinity War had a lot of special effects and it’s the biggest movie in the world. It’s going to win.

period (1)

Best Documentary Short Subject

Will Win

Period. End of Sentence

Should Win

n/a

Could Win

n/a

I’ll be honest with you. I, like you, didn’t watch any of the shorts. Period. End of Sentence is available on Netflix which means many of the Academy voters who don’t want to put in the work will have easy access to it. But it really could go to any of them.

marguerite (1)

Best Live Action Short Subject

Will Win

Marguerite

Should Win

n/a

Could Win

n/a

For some reason, all of the live action shorts this year are either about kids getting killed or kids killing other people. Except for Marguerite. So I chose Marguerite because I thought voters might like to award levity.

bao movie (1)

Best Animated Short

Will Win

Bao

Should Win

Bao

Could Win

Weekends

Ah, The Pixar award. A non-Pixar win for best animated short is rare, but won’t happen this year. Thankfully, Bao, the quirky story of a mother and son, actually deserves to win in my opinion.

Alright, those are all my picks. I think I probably got half of them wrong, but we’ll see. Enjoy the Oscars! If you can.
